What is a Frangipani?

A Frangipani is a beautiful tropical plant that is also known as a Plumeria.  Plumerias are easy to care for and maintain. They are a beautiful addition to any tropical backyard garden.

My grandmother has this beautiful Plumeria tree on the side of her house. It is about 25 feet high and branches out about 15 feet. Just like a kid, I will climb it to get the flowers.

During the winter months, most plumerias tend to rest and lose all their leaves. They definitely are not at their prettiest during this stage. I like to refer to them as a piece of art. Not all of the tropical plumerias lose their leaves during the winter months. If the climate is ideal, they will keep their leaves. Due to the favorable climate in Maui, they do not have such a drastic change in appearance.

When spring arrives these beautiful tropical plumerias comes to life. All their leaves begin to grow back and in due time, the buds will open up. I absolutely love the tropical plants precious blooms. No two blooms are the same, so look carefully and you may spot the different varieties of shades. When the blooms first open, it may have very vibrant colors and the fragrance may be very strong. The longer the bloom stays open, the colors and fragrance will slowly vanish.

In the following pages,  I will guide you on the proper care for your frangipani or plumeria. You will also find an abundance of pictures to assist you in finding the right one for your garden. Just click on each page to find out specific information.

Plumerias grow best in zones 9-11. That does NOT mean people living outside of these zones could not grow them. You would need to replicate their specific environment.

The fragrant on my yellowPlumeria smells like a sweet peach.

Everything you Need to Know about Planting Plumeria Cuttings

Frangipani will be one of the easiest tropical plants you will plant. I have given you two different methods to try out. I will tell you, I have had success in both methods.

What to do When you Have Seedpods

Your Plumeria plant has begun to grow some strange antennas. No need to worry! They are growing seedlings in which will turn into beautiful flowers. Unfortunately, those seedlings will take 3-5 years before you see the flowers.

Not all Plumerias will produce a seedpod. However, you can try and place another Plumeria next to it to for cross pollination. This may turn your none producing seedpod into a producing seedpod.

What should you do with your Plumeria Seedlings

After waiting all that time for your Plumeria seedpod to finally open, now what. This page will give you step by step instructions on how to plant your seedlings.
